Foundation student, Bethany Conroy who graduated St Benedict’s College in 2017 in our very first Year 12 cohort, has been successful in securing a QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, valued at $30,000.
The Scholarship program is QUT’s premier offering for students with outstanding academic achievement. In addition to financial support, the program helps recipients to make the most of their university experience through extra development opportunities, which build leadership skills and professional networks.
Bethany is undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Queensland University of Technology and we wish her well as she embarks on her chosen course of study.
Comments from Bethany on 19 March 2018:
This year I was honoured to receive a scholarship to study Engineering with Honours at Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point Campus. This is a four year degree and accepts students who demonstrate outstanding achievements in years 11 and 12 in maths and science. I was selected to be part of the 2018 Vice Chancellor scholarship team which comprises of 120 students who studied in Year 12 last year and received excellent academic results. I feel very privileged to be part of this elite group of QUT students who not only receive financial support but exclusive opportunities for networking, support, camps, exchanges and career development.
Being the first graduating class from St Benedict’s College in 2018 provided wonderful opportunities to work closely as part of a small group of Year 12 students and access support and mentoring from the exceptional staff. I would like to thank in particular my Maths, English and Science teachers who include Mrs Connor, Mr Carlill and Ms Guthrie who generously supported me with their time, expertise and professional guidance.
Many teachers and school leaders including Mrs Dempster, encouraged and supported me in applying for many scholarships. I am very grateful to the staff of St Benedict’s College, my parents and peers in supporting my academic endeavours.
St Benedict’s College offers a wonderful community where each student is given the opportunity to flourish and grow. Each student is valued and known by our staff and individual needs, including those needing learning support or gifted extension are planned for and supported.
Our teachers are continuously striving to help our students grow a love of learning and to have the skill set to be confident life-long learners. Flexible and innovative learning experiences are created where all students can develop a sense of curiosity, an ability to be innovative, adaptable and resilient. A diverse and broad-based education in the middle years leads to a variety of senior school study options and pathways including university and vocational options. We offer a full range of core and elective studies, including extension and excellence programs in curriculum, sport and culture.
The current teachings of the Catholic Church, particularly as they relate to young people of today, together with the study of scripture, ethics, morality and ritual are covered in Religion classes. A Pastoral Care Program provides our students with opportunities for personal, interpersonal and social development while the extensive co-curricular program enables students to actively participate in cultural, sporting and community-based activities.
St Benedict’s College has a team of highly professional, experienced, dedicated, and most of all, caring staff. This is extremely important in ensuring that students are happy at school and are able to achieve their potential in whatever subjects or areas of study are chosen.
As your daughter or son enters St Benedict’s College, I can assure you of our strong support and our commitment to their personal success and well-being. We welcome you to our community and encourage your involvement in the life of the College.
God’s blessings
Our College celebrates Laudato Si this month.
The theme of Laudato Si, which is a document written by Pope Francis with the meaning ‘On care of our common home’ was students coming dressed in casual dress for a gold coin donation on the first Friday of September in "Earthy" tones like those found in nature. All funds raised targeted at supporting our farmers through one of the worst droughts in history.
Pope Francis relates Laudato Si to relationships. He states that we are forgetting our interconnectedness with the earth, and highlights that harming the environment, we are damaging not only our relationship with it but also with other humans, particularly vulnerable groups such as the poor and future generations who rely on our stewardship of the land.
The day will bring to life our College values of Balance in life and Community as we come together to reflect on how we can care more for our Common Home. The students enjoyed lunchtime activities, after several displays around the school to raise awareness of the teachings as well as practical application of the principles.
