It was with great excitement that Ambrose Treacy College opened on 28 January 2015. The establishment of a Catholic College for boys from Years 4 to 12 created a great deal of interest and demand for places in the initial years and has continued to grow year on year with a ever growing waitlist of students. Ambrose Treacy College is proudly a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. Combining the energy and excitement of a new school with the rich tradition of 80 years of providing quality boys’ education on this site, Ambrose Treacy College will guide boys through their important formation years into manhood. We focus entirely on the unique needs of boys and celebrate their strengths and abilities. With over 80 years of experience in teaching boys, we understand what makes them tick and knowing boys means we teach them the way boys learn best. In each of our stages of schooling we encourage the successful completion of the developmental tasks that boys must negotiate at each stage in their academic lives.

Learning today… at Ambrose Treacy College

At Ambrose Treacy College academic excellence is about each boy striving towards his personal best. We believe engaged and motivated boys achieve their personal best and the curriculum has been designed with this in mind. We focus on the following practices, which have been at the heart of the College for more than 80 years.
•Expectations & Communication: Put simply, our teachers know our students well, listen to them and engage with them. They have high expectations for all students.
•Teaching Methods: We use a range of teaching strategies to engage our students, because we know that boys’ needs and learning abilities vary from one person to the next.
•Theoretical & Practical: Our teaching involves both a theoretical and practical approach to learning. Where possible, we encourage students to participate, to ensure both theoretical and practical learning, which results in better understanding.
•Feedback & Encouragement: Our teachers provide our students with ongoing feedback and encouragement so they understand their own strengths and weaknesses. This gives our boys a very real and customised approach to working harder in the right areas so they can better manage their school work and aim to improve.
•Keeping It Real: We ensure we’re open, flexible, fair and consistent in dealing with students and above all, we make sure we maintain a sense of humour.
•Community Care: Making connections in their learning with the wider community is important, as we believe learning should be seen as having real world relevance.

We believe learning at Ambrose Treacy College is all about balance. A balanced offering across STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Humanities and the Arts allows boys to grow and excel across the many facets of their emerging self. Here, learning does not start and stop at the classroom door. The rich co-curricular life of the school complements what happens inside the classroom to enable boys to achieve the kind of balanced life that will set them up well for a healthy, happy adulthood.

We also ensure the integration of information technology across all curriculum areas. No longer just a subject in its own right, the use of information technologies is a part of how the 21st century learner discovers the world and responds to it. A careful selection of devices chosen specifically to suit the needs of learners at the various stages of the schooling, ensures a seamless transition from the learner as a consumer to a creator.

One of the most important features of any school is the quality of its teachers. The teachers here at Ambrose Treacy College specialise in boys’ education. They know the structures needed to help them manage the organisational side of their learning. They understand the physical nature of boys and they enjoy the type of learning environment that capitalises on this strength. All teachers, across each of the learning areas, are committed to challenging and supporting boys to the highest standards of literacy and understand the benefits of consistency from one class to another. Most of all, they enjoy working with boys. The mateship, humour and fun boys bring to the classroom are valued by our teachers.

We focus entirely on the unique needs of boys and celebrate their strengths and abilities. With over 75 years of experience in teaching boys, we understand what makes them tick and knowing boys means we teach them the way boys learn best. In each of our stages of schooling we encourage the successful completion of the developmental tasks that boys must negotiate at each stage in their academic lives. In everything we do, we aim to inspire excellence; a personal excellence that sees all boys reach their potential.

Learning Today Leading Tomorrow

Ambrose Treacy College will be structured to three separate learning and pastoral environments within the overall College structure. This structure comprises three schools:
•Ambrose Treacy College Junior School for Years 4 to 6
•Ambrose Treacy College Middle School for Years 7 to 9
•Ambrose Treacy College Senior School for Years 10 to 12

Each school within the College has its own specialised approach to correspond with the developmental stage of the students’ learning journey. While each school has its own distinct character, it remains one College in the Edmund Rice tradition.

In everything we do, we aim to inspire excellence; a personal excellence that sees all boys reach their potential.

Sport

Ambrose Treacy College values the role sport plays in the development of boys and we give all students access to a sporting team. Participation in team sports helps build a great spirit in the school, educates students in teamwork and sportsmanship, develops skills in various sports, helps create a sense of belonging to the school community, contributes to a fit and healthy lifestyle, and fosters positive attitudes towards sport as a leisure activity. Our diverse program offers the opportunity for every single boy at our school to enjoy sport, recreation and physical activity during their time with us.

Ambrose Treacy College offers sporting programs at various levels – participation, competition and elite. This covers traditional school sports including swimming, cross country, track and field, cricket, rugby union, football, basketball and tennis; as well as a variety of other sports including Australian football, water polo, canoe polo, triathlon, kayaking, canoeing, golf, indoor cricket and indoor soccer. Boys have access to competition at a regional, state and national level and belong to the Met West School Sports association.

At Ambrose Treacy College, we offer sporting opportunities across school, club and community contexts, with our fundamental purpose being to provide opportunity for all of our boys to engage in sport and to find personal excellence and enjoyment in all that they do. By not restricting ourselves to a school-only sport structure, we provide increased and varied opportunities for boys to compete.

Coaching and training times are on weekdays before or after school, or at lunch times, and competition is held Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays, depending on the individual sport structure.

Sporting Facilities

The College is set on beautiful grounds beside the Brisbane River and the sporting facilities include ovals for cricket, rugby, soccer and athletics; a covered 25 metre heated, eight lane swimming pool; two basketball/tennis courts; six cricket practice nets, indoor hall; handball courts for each year group; and shaded play spaces.   We also have partnerships with a variety of external venues which allows boys to access high quality training and competition facilities.

Cultural Program

Ambrose Treacy College’s cultural program aims to develop self-awareness, self-confidence and inter-personal skills in the students. The program combines classroom programs with co-curricular activities to provide students with a vast range of opportunities, to have fun and develop themselves. We strongly encourage all students to participate in the cultural program of the College. Experienced and talented teachers and tutors guide the boys in developing their creative talents in forming a strong music and performing arts culture in the College community.

The Culture Program presents opportunities in the following areas:

Instrumental Music

The Ambrose Treacy College Instrumental Music Program is an integral part of the school’s co-curriculum. At Ambrose Treacy College the program offers a vast array of musical opportunities for students in the Junior School,  Middle and Senior Schools. The College currently has a wide array of bands and ensembles including:

ATC Wind Ensemble • Concert Band • Junior Band • Middle School Beginner Band • ATC Big Band • Jazz Ensemble • Jazz Orchestra • Flute Ensemble • Clarinet Ensemble • Saxophone Ensemble • Brass Ensemble • Percussion Ensembles

 Performance opportunities

Students have a range of performance opportunities throughout the year including: School Assemblies, the Autumn, Winter and Spring Concerts, Grandparents Day, the Cultural Trail, Orientation Days and the Night of Excellence. Every year ensembles also compete in the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival. Some students who play the piano or guitar have opportunities to participate in ensembles. All piano and guitar students are provided with opportunities to perform as soloists or in small groups at chamber music evenings, assemblies or other school events.

For any further information please contact the Music Department Administration at: music@atc.qld.edu.au

College Choirs

As the voice is our first and most personal instrument, singing is encouraged strongly at Ambrose Treacy College.  All Classroom Music students are taught singing through a pedagogically sound Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze based music curriculum. Further to the Classroom Music programme, there are opportunities for students to extend their singing technique and enjoyment through the avenues of Choir and Vocal Ensemble.  To cater for the boys’ enthusiasm, a wide range of repertoire is taught in English, as well as through such languages as Latin, French, Japanese, Welsh, Yiddish and Chinese, and through the varying genres of early and sacred music, international folk songs, music theatre and pop.  Choralography embellishes much of the repertoire.  The groups represent their College at many events, such as all College Masses and Liturgies, School Concerts, Night of Excellence, Orientation Days and the Queensland Schools’ and Colleges Music Festival, where all groups have consistently enjoyed A Section Gold Awards.

Chess Club

Students may participate in a series of lessons, run by Gardiner Chess at the school, to promote chess and encourage skill development. Friendly games of chess can be played at lunch times, in the library, either with a chess set or on computer. Students are also encouraged to enter external competitions to test their abilities against other players of their own age. All boys are given the opportunity to compete in a chess competition against other schools.

Debating

Students are given the opportunity to compete in a debating competition against other schools. Students may then continue developing their debating skills during the rest of the year in competitions held by the Queensland Debating Union.

Public Speaking

All students are given the opportunity to compete in a public speaking competition against other schools. The boys learn public speaking skills as part of the College’s English curriculum, and are also coached for the competition. Students also have an internal competition, from which a ‘Public Speaking Award’ is presented to the winning speaker.

Speech and Drama

Classroom drama lessons are supplemented by a voluntary speech and drama program that is conducted by an external specialist. This program develops drama, speaking and presentation skills for students to perform in productions and to improve their public speaking skills.

Leading tomorrow

Here at Ambrose Treacy College, we aim to develop young men who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Throughout their time at the College, our students will be offered a connected holistic formation framework that provides support for their purposeful growth as they journey from boyhood into young men. The College’s formation framework develops courageous young men of character and integrity who build compassionate relationships and proudly contribute to the College, their family and their community. Our program is based on the work of Edmund Rice who demonstrated a respect for self and others.
Our leadership programs are based on presence, dignity and action.
Pastoral Care is an integral component of the College community. Classroom teachers and Middle Leaders develop strong relationships with the students and work with them at an individual level. Leadership programs in Years 6 and 9 provide skills for the students to be buddied up with Year 4 and 7 students respectively.
Our Pastoral Care system is also strongly supported by our Outdoor Education program, Retreat Program, the College curriculum, the College Counsellors and Service Learning Programs. The College develops leaders through a strong co-curricular program encompassing sport and cultural programs.
As a Catholic College in the Edmund Rice Tradition, our Pastoral Care structures are consistent with the spirit and ethos of our faith. We invite all students into the story of Jesus and strive to make his message of compassion, justice and peace a living reality.

Service

At Ambrose Treacy College we believe service is central to the authenticity of our community as it empowers a boy’s capacity to live his faith through action. We provide a comprehensive service learning program designed to form young men for others through meaningful and challenging opportunities, programs and immersions. Each boy is required to accrue hours of service as they work with, learn from and build relationships with those on the margins. Our boys are provided with a range of initiatives to serve both within and outside our community, and are invited to create additional service learning opportunities as they progress.

At Ambrose Treacy College each boys reflects upon the nature of their service experiences in light of the stories of Jesus, Edmund Rice and Ambrose Treacy  in order to make their message of justice and compassion a living reality. The service learning initiatives are structured, sustained and integrated into our academic curriculum allowing our boys to develop their faith, community connections and academic achievement

Vision Statement
“Ambrose Treacy College aims to be an authentic Catholic community in the Edmund Rice tradition, that promotes excellence in learning, leadership and service in order to challenge its members to make a prophetic difference for our world.”

As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, we are called to be authentic to the Charter of Edmund Rice Education. We aspire to be faithful to the four touchstones of The Charter: Liberating Education; Gospel Spirituality; Inclusive Community; Justice and Solidarity. The integration of the touchstones reflects our mission and helps inform the authentic development of the Edmund Rice charism within our community.

Through a community consultation, a new vision statement for Ambrose Treacy College was developed in 2014. This vision statement aims to capture the essence of what we as a College stand for. Our vision is built around our desire to help educate and prepare young men for a world that is desperately calling out for our future leaders to be young men of character who will help shape the direction of our future communities.
