Matthew Flinders Anglican College is one of Queensland's top co-educational, independent schools, located at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. 

The College provides provides its 1,410 students from Prep to Year 12 with an outstanding contemporary education to prepare them for tertiary study and beyond. Students are guided to recognise and develop their character, contribution, academic excellence and leadership as key components of The Flinders Way.

The Flinders Early Learning Centre supports children during their early years of pre- and kindergarten education, and enables a smooth transition to the Preparatory Year at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. 

Outstanding academic results have seen Flinders named in local, state and national media as one of the top schools in Queensland and a leading school on the Sunshine Coast. 

The College is investing in the campus with its Flinders Masterplan to provide new agile, contemporary learning spaces for its students. New College spaces include the Year 7 Precinct, the Flagship Centre for students in Years 5 and 6, and the Wonderarium learning centre in the Primary School. A new state-of-the-art Design Centre opened in the Secondary School in 2024. 

The College prides itself on recruiting, retaining and supporting the very best teachers and support staff to provide a quality education for students, and a culture of innovation and ongoing professional development for staff. 

Flinders students embrace the vast opportunities available to them at the College. Students strive to achieve in sports, the creative arts, music, community service and more through the College's rich and diverse co-curricular programs.

The Flinders Music Program is one of the top performing and mentoring programs in Queensland, with a Music Edge extension program for students in Years 8 and 9 to develop their passion. Students with a passion for the performing arts are nurtured through the Flinders Creative Arts Program to develop skills for the stage, as well as technical skills in lighting, design and more. 

College sporting teams achieve across a variety of sports including netball, water polo, touch football, basketball and football (soccer). 

Flinders has top sportspeople and leaders on staff as Directors of Coaching for the sports of netball, rugby, cricket, soccer, hockey, basketball, water polo, touch football and volleyball. 

The Flinders Elite Athlete Program supports and extends top student athletes to reach their potential in their chosen sport as well as in their academic life. Student wellbeing is a priority at Flinders and the FEAP program strives to teach young athletes the skills and strategies for a healthy life.

Academic Excellence

Flinders is a leading academic school on the Sunshine Coast. Our students thrive on the positive culture for learning and wellbeing that is celebrated here. In 2022 Flinders achieved an outstanding median ATAR of 92.45. There were 10 Flinders students who achieved an ATAR of 99 or above, and a further 11 who achieved an ATAR of 98 or above. While 38.3% of students achieved an ATAR greater than 95.

In three years, three Flinders students have achieved the highest ATAR score possible, of 99.95. In 2022, Flinders student Laura Webb placed in the top ranking, as one of only 33 Queensland students to do so. 

Flinders students also excel in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). In 2022, the College as the top NAPLAN Primary School and Secondary School on the Sunshine Coast. 

Founded in 1990, Flinders is named in the media as one of the top 100 schools in Australia and one of the top 10 schools in Queensland. Our rigorous and personalised academic program inspires curiosity, develops critical thinking, fosters intellectual agility, and prepares students to be socially conscious and responsible citizens in a culturally diverse world. 

Opportunities to Excel

Both in class and beyond, our students at Flinders are offered extraordinary opportunities to maximise their potential and explore new horizons. Extension programs, personalised learning approaches and extensive co-curricular options cultivate in our students the spirit to achieve mastery and personal best. The Flinders co-curricular life gives students opportunities to develop their passions through the arts, drama, music, sport and community service learning.

The Flinders Elite Athlete Program supports our elite student athletes to balance the demands of school and sporting life for improved health and wellbeing. While the Flinders Music Edge program for Years 8 and 9 students is a selective entry course designed to accelerate music students with particular talent and expertise. The Flinders Creative Arts program has many opportunities for students to develop their musical theatre skills and passion, as well as the technical aspect of stage theatre across lighting, design and more. 

A world view is important and that’s why our College focuses on service opportunities for students to engage with local, national and global organisations to support people in need.

Impressive Learning Environment

Located in Buderim at the heart of the Sunshine Coast, Flinders is surrounded by rainforest and located 10 minutes’ drive from our stunning surf beaches. Our College provides an impressive learning environment where students are inspired and motivated to excel. Flinders’ outstanding sporting and creative arts facilities include a state-of-the-art performance centre, indoor sports centre, aquatic centre and floodlit sports ovals.

Flinders Masterplan

The College is planning for the future with the Flinders Masterplan. The construction project is providing agile and modern learning spaces and facilities to enhance the learning environment for students and the professional environment for educators and operational staff. New facilies include the Year 7 Precinct; the Flagship Centre for the Years 5 and 6 students; and the Flinders Primary Wonderarium learning resource centre. A new state-of-the-art Infinity Centre in the Secondary School, opened in 2024. 

ABOUT THE FLINDERS SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM

Matthew Flinders Anglican College is committed to providing a wide range of learning opportunities across all areas of the curriculum and to nurturing individual student’s talents and interests.

As part of this commitment, the College offers scholarships for students with special talents who, in turn, will make a significant contribution to the life of the College.

The scholarships, remitting up to 50% of tuition fees, are offered to students entering Years 7–12. The Principal’s Scholarship, offering full remission of tuition fees, is offered to outstanding students not currently enrolled at the College. 

Students interested in the College's Music and Sports Scholarships will be able to apply for these opportunities later in the year.

Ms Michelle Carroll is an outstanding leader with a passion for and academic interest in adolescent wellbeing. Prior to her appointment as the fifth Principal of Matthew Flinders Anglican College, commencing January 2024, Michelle was the Principal of leading all-girls school, St Catherine’s School in Melbourne, Victoria over 10 years.

Her focus as Principal of St Catherine’s School was on creating and delivering an educational environment that supports students’ individual strengths to flourish and empowers all students to learn and grow as confident, capable and healthy young people.

In her previous roles, Michelle was Deputy Principal at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School and Dean of Students at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar and Junior Grammar School. During her early career in education, Michelle worked as a Teacher across Science and Health and Physical Education subjects in Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Loreto College, and in an international school in Singapore.

Flinders Wins Sustainability Award for Flinders Farm and Flinders Masterplan

Matthew Flinders Anglican College has been awarded The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs Award 2024 for being “a shining example of effective sustainability education in action”.

Flinders is one of just six schools in Queensland and a total of 25 schools across Australia to be awarded a 5-Star Sustainable Program and recognised as “forward thinking and innovative schools, leading a movement to conserve natural resources and create a greener future”. 

The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs aims to influence more schools and communities to follow the schools playing a critical role in equipping young people to be lifelong stewards of society and the environment. 

Flinders Principal Michelle Carroll said it was wonderful for the College to be recognised for being at the forefront of sustainability and environmental education programs. 

Flinders won the award for its commitment to sustainability across the campus, including the regeneration of its half-hectare Flinders Farm, which includes a 900m2 citrus orchard, 500m2 of vegetable beds, 14 bee hives, chickens, a compost-making facility and a biofertilizer-making facility.

Under the expert guidance of Farmer Jeff, the Farm has become a vibrant, hands-on environmental education hub for the College’s more than 1,400 students from Prep to Year 12 as well as the Flinders Early Learning Centre community. 

The College is also committed to sustainability as a key part of campus operations and development, such as through the Flinders Masterplan’s suite of new facilities, and has one of the largest school solar installations across Australia. 

Ms Carroll said, “Flinders is delighted to be awarded The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs Award 2024 and to be recognised as one of the leaders in embedding sustainability into school culture.

“Our aim is to empower our students to understand their place in the world and build the skills, confidence and capacity to have a positive impact in their communities,” Ms Carroll said.  

“Through our Flinders Farm and a range of curriculum and co-curricular programs, our students are learning how to act responsibly and respectfully to nurture and protect the planet for future generations.”
