St Margaret's is an independent day and boarding school for girls from Pre-Prep to Year 12 and boys in Pre-Prep. Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of The Society of the Sacred Advent, St Margaret's is renowned as being one of Queensland's leading educators of young women.
St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, situated high on a hill in beautiful leafy Ascot, in Brisbane northern suburbs, is an independent day and boarding school for girls from Pre-Prep to Year 12. We also welcome boys in Pre-Prep.
There are approximately 1460 students in the school, with around 500 primary students and 950 girls in the secondary school. St Margaret's has a long and proud boarding history and around 190 boarders from Years 5 to 12 are accommodated in the boarding house, which is in the very heart of the Ascot campus.
St Margaret’s is well known for its focus on academic excellence, quality learning and teaching, and its commitment to pastoral care, together with an holistic approach to the education of the whole child. Each child is known and nurtured on their learning and personal journey throughout their time at the school.
St Margaret’s girls are engaged, enthusiastic and energetic in all they do. They embrace the many extracurricular opportunities available, which make for very vibrant sporting, music and performing and visual arts programs. As a school of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent, worship and spiritual development stand at the centre of St Margaret's. In addition to weekly religious and values education classes, students participate in regular prayer, reflection and formal worship. Age-appropriate liturgies are supported by regular chapel services and whole school celebrations of major Christian festivals occur throughout the year.
As St Margaret’s is a multi-pathway school tailoring learning for its students, the suite of subject offerings is diverse. It includes academically rigorous authority subjects as well as vocational options.
Years 7 and 8 students study a broad core curriculum of English, Mathematics, The Arts, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Modern Languages and Religious and Values Education.
Years 9 students study core curriculum subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Health and Physical Education and Religious and Values Education. Additionally, students select three elective subjects (one Major and two minors) that will be studied in both Years 9 and 10. Students choose from Major electives: French, Chinese (Mandarin), Music, Drama, Visual Art, Geography, English as an Additional Language, and STEM and Minor electives: Geography, Food and Design, Economics and Entrepreneurial Studies, Legal Studies, Physical Education, Digital Technologies, Music, Drama and Visual Art and STEM.
Year 10 students study the Core Subjects of English, Mathematics (10.1 including the Numeracy Short Course and - 10.2), Science (10.1 and 10.2), History, Religious and Values Education, Health and Physical Education. They choose two elective subjects (one from Chinese, Drama, Economics &
Entrepreneurial Studies, Food & Design, French, Legal Studies
Visual Art, English as an Additional Language, STEM) and the second major (choosing from Economics & Entrepreneurial Studies, Food & Design, Geography, Music, Physical Education, Visual Art, Digital Technology, English Extension
[Invitation Only], Maths Extension [Invitation Only]) and a Certificate II qualification (options can include Sport Coaching, Hospitality, Community Health, Events and Tourism, Agriculture, Engineering Pathways).
In Years 11 and 12 students will choose one of the following QCE pathways:
Pathway option 1: Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) Pathway
For the ATAR pathway, five General subjects must be selected from the following groups:
Group A - Choose at least one subject:
English; Literature; English as an Additional Language
Group B - Choose a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 subjects
Accounting; Biology; Chemistry; Chinese; Digital Solutions; Economics; English; French; Geography; Literature, Mathematical Methods; Modern History; Physics; Specialist Mathematics
Please note: If two English subjects are chosen from Group A, a minimum of one Group B subject may be selected.
Group C - Choose a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 2 subjects
Ancient History; Design; Drama; General Mathematics; Legal Studies; Music; Physical Education; Visual Art
Eligibility for an ATAR will require satisfactory completion of a QCAA English subject. Satisfactory completion will require students to attain a result that is equivalent to a C in one of four subjects — English, Literature, English and Literature Extension, or English as an Additional Language.
Pathway option 2: Portfolio Pathway
The portfolio pathway gives students qualifications that allow access to work, apprenticeship and study options.
Group A: Choose one subject: English, Literature or English as an Additional Language
Group B: Choose a minimum of 1 or a maximum of 2 Diplomas: Diploma of Business; Diploma of Project Management
Group C: Choose 2 ATAR subjects from groups B & C (see above)
Group D: Special Project – a school-based program will be offered to provide additional access to work, apprenticeship and study options.
Teaching and Learning
Eunice Science and Resource Centre - is a state-of-the-art facility with a modern library and six science laboratories.
The Arts Centre perches on hillside with stunning city views - a great backdrop for learning! This building contains three visual arts practical classrooms, a pottery area, drama room, foyer and gallery space. The foyer is a multipurpose space for meetings, performances, functions (including weddings), seminars, lectures and conferences.
The recently refurbished contemporary hospitality area includes a modern industrial kitchen and educational café facilities.
Our Year 7 precinct has five Year 7 classrooms with lockers and an outdoor teaching area. This dedicated area helps transition the students from primary to secondary school.
A 120-seat lecture theatre - The Loft - fully equipped with modern technology.
Sport
In 2020, our new sports precinct was opened at the northern end of the campus. This includes the Philip Harris Gym with an indoor full size court area used for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton; a rock-climbing wall and retractable seating for assemblies; a new water polo sized pool that includes two 50m lanes and is operable all year-round; multi-purpose outdoor courts with night lights; HPE classrooms, cardio suite with ergos and strength and conditioning equipment
Windsor Park is just ten minutes away and caters for athletics, hockey, touch football, soccer, cricket and netball. It has an athletics track, playing fields and netball courts.
The St Margaret's Shed is conveniently located on Breakfast Creek at Albion.
Boarding
The St Margaret's Boarding House accommodates around 190 residents. It is centrally located in the heart of the campus, along with the dining hall and laundry facilities. The youngest boarders are housed in their own dedicated wing. The Health Centre is also located in this precinct and is staffed by two Registered Nurses.
Through a wide range of learning experiences such as sporting, artistic and cultural activities, students may enrich their lives and go on to pursue a career or lifelong interests in such fields. As a member of the Andrews Cup Primary Schools Association and the Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA), St Margaret’s participates in a range of academic, sporting and cultural competitions against other long-standing Brisbane schools.

Academic Advising
St Margaret’s has established an innovative, award-winning Academic Advising program for students in Years 7 to 12.
Students are assigned to an Academic Advisor (form teachers for Years 7 & 8), who they meet with in small groups, twice a week during timetabled academic advising sessions.
With assistance from their advisor, students set academic goals and track their progress through our Learning Analytics Program. The sessions also provide another opportunity to check in on a student’s general wellbeing.
When the girls are not with their advisor, they have a block of time to use appropriately. It provides them with the responsibility and freedom to practise skills of self-monitoring and self-regulation.
Academic Advising gives students the tools and confidence to personally evaluate their results and take ownership of their own learning and its outcomes.
Through the student ownership of school data, the mentoring from a staff member and the increasing conversation between teachers/students and student/parent, we aim to increase the girls’ learning capacities and enable them to gauge their own learning.
Continuous Reporting
St Margaret’s regularly reports on progress to students in Years 7 to 12 in the secondary school and their parents through a Continuous Reporting program.
Through a student portal, students can view and reflect on their results and feedback including where they sit comparatively in the cohort, their GPA, and teacher comments.
They can then utilise this relevant and timely feedback to identify steps to take to improve, set goals and evaluate their progress.
This process promotes effective self-management, where students can take responsibility and ownership of their learning, with their advisors assisting them to develop this independence.
Global experiences
St Margaret's regularly offers international tours across a range of activities and interests. These can be cultural/languages/history trips, music touring, NASA space trips, philanthropic projects or of a more recreational nature such as our recent New Zealand skiing tour. Each seek to broaden girls' horizons and give them a greater global perspective of the world in which they live.
Year 10 Global Exchange Program
The signature Year 10 Global Exchange Program enables girls to acquire and further develop new skills in problem solving, independent decision-making and social poise; expand their cultural and ethnic awareness; enhance their passion for learning; and become exceptional ambassadors of the program overseas and in the St Margaret’s community.
The program promotes the vision of the school in providing unique opportunities for students to participate in global citizenship in the context of school and family life and encourages active demonstration of the six core values of St Margaret’s – passion, respect, spirit, integrity, courage and faith.

St Margaret's is the only full time girls boarding school in Brisbane. Boarders have a significant impact on the life of the school, contributing to the wonderfully diverse school community.
Since the first three boarders enrolled in 1895, St Margaret's has spent 130 years educating generations of women from rural, regional and remote areas of Queensland, Australia and the world.
The boarding house is located in the heart of the school grounds, nestled in the leafy suburb of Ascot, with gardens and wonderful city views. it is a busy place with a warm and friendly atmosphere, build on the values of respect, consideration and honesty.
The school welcomes boarders from Years 5 to 12. Many of the housemothers are qualified teachers, so their personalised supervision of prep-time, along with current teaching staff, provides excellent academic support for boarders.
The main focus at St Margaret's is the level of care and commitment to each individual. The emotional health and wellbeing of students, staff and families is a priority.
St Margaret's is proud of its strong tradition of pastoral care for students. In essence, pastoral care is the school's expression of concern for the welfare of each student. This concern encompasses academic, spiritual, personal and extra curricular areas. New students are warmly welcomed by staff and current students and usually settle in quickly to school life.
Form teachers are responsible for the day to day care of the form class and provide a stable, caring contact for the same group of students throughout the school year.
Each year group from Year 7 to Year 12 in the Secondary School is in the care of a Head of Year who monitors the academic progress and level of pastoral care required for students. The relevant Head of Year is the first point of contact for any pastoral concern.
Students are also supported by the school chaplain, careers counsellor and psychologists, who offer a range of services including personal, spiritual and emotional support, tertiary study and career guidance, and time management advice. The psychologists are available to see all students (Secondary and Primary) to assist with any issues such as adjusting to boarding or being in a new school, grief, friendship difficulties, exam pressure, or difficulties at home. This counselling gives the opportunity to discuss concerns on a one to one basis with someone who will listen to your perspective and assist to look at your options.
Students in Years 9 - 12 also meet with their Academic Advisor twice a week. These sessions provide another opportunity to check in on a student''s general wellbeing.
House System
St Margaret's House System forms part of the student wellbeing focus. Students are assigned to one of eight houses each overseen by a house coordinator. In addition, two house captains are appointed to each house from the Year 12 cohort. Every member of staff is also a member of a house.
Houses take part in sporting, cultural and community activities, where the emphasis is on fostering a sense of community and belonging. The house system generates integration and interconnectedness across the year levels, encouraging the formation of friendships and fostering both a strong house identity as well as strengthening whole school spirit. The house system also provides opportunities for developing leadership and teamwork skills, learning cooperation, and putting service to others before personal ambitions.
The school’s six core values are born from our Christian faith through our Anglican tradition - spirit, inclusivity, integrity, courage, respect and passion. These are embedded in every endeavour that the students undertake.

Hornibrook Bus Service runs from Redcliffe to connect with the train from Sandgate.

St Margaret's scholarship and bursary program is designed to identify and celebrate girls who have strengths and expertise in a variety of areas, providing opportunities for girls to develop and be challenged in a nurturing environment.
St Margaret’s offers part remission of fees to students who meet the standards set out for each individual scholarship category and has a strong commitment to assisting students who would greatly benefit from a St Margaret’s education, but who, without financial aid, would be unable to attend.
Scholarships are not open to domestic or international students currently attending St Margaret's, unless applying for a scholarship based on financial needs, in which case the Scholarship Financial Assistance Application Form must accompany the scholarship application.

St Margaret’s students have once again received strong ATAR results with 8.2% of the Class of 2021 achieving an ATAR of 99 or above, placing them in the top 1% of the state, and one student achieving 99.95, the highest possible ATAR result.
A total of 63.5% achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the State.
Of the 26 students who studied a Portfolio Pathway, 15 graduated with a Diploma of Business, 12 graduated with a Diploma of Project Management and all 26 completed either a Certificate II or Certificate III across a range of courses.
Principal Ros Curtis said the strong academic success of the Class of 2021 was a reflection of the students' resilience, persistence and dedication to academic achievement.

A bold new vision for St Margaret's sport
In mid 2018, St Margaret's announced plans to develop a state-of-the-art new sports precinct.
The new development will transform the school’s northern end of the campus, between Butler and Lapraik Streets and adjacent to the primary school.
The development plan boasts a water polo sized heated pool enabling students to swim and train for sports such as lifesaving and water polo all year round; new tennis courts with lights and a new gymnasium, strength and conditioning gym and HPE classrooms.
St Margaret’s recognises the importance of physical education, and the impact it has on the health and wellbeing of students. When students are at their healthiest and happiest, their academic performance and the way that they engage and interact in the classroom is improved.
The opportunities for innovation and collaboration in teaching and learning that this facility will provide are truly endless.
Year 8 student Lucy Damman said: “It will be great to have a heated pool all year round. Pre-season water polo training, even in October, is so cold in the 50m pool, and I’m excited to hear we will be able to hold home matches at St Margaret’s, which will be a real advantage”.
Sophie Webster in Year 7 said: ”With night lights for tennis, we will be able to extend the time we can play and practice. Sometimes we can’t play now if it has been raining, so all-weather courts will really help too”.
This announcement signifies St Margaret’s commitment to providing an environment that prepares confident, compassionate, capable women able to contribute in a global community.
St Margaret’s bold new vision – to be funded in part by a capital campaign – will be one of the most significant undertakings in the recent history of St Margaret’s.
The school has a long history of philanthropy with the facilities the girls benefit from today being delivered by the efforts of previous generations of parents, past students and staff.
Our community including past students, parents and staff have already shown their support through philanthropic contributions.
The project commenced in December 2018 with the expected completion date to be late 2019 or early 2020.
