A Rich Learning Environment

Celebrating 135 years of excellence in girls' education, Wenona is an independent day and boarding school in North Sydney. Wenona continues to embrace change to make the most of technology and other opportunities.

A non-selective school, Wenona has a well-earned reputation for outstanding and impressive academic results. Our students benefit from small class sizes, professional and engaging teaching and learning across a broad range of subjects, innovative programs and effective use of technology.

We are proud of our caring community and academic peer culture, where successes are celebrated.

Girls enjoy the use of our Evening Study Centre, professional counselling and careers advice, enrichment, extension and support.

Our broad co-curricular program, which includes performing arts, creative arts, debating, cadets and many sports, extends the academic curriculum, providing experiences in leadership, cooperative teamwork and sportsmanship.

Tailoring Learning for Girls

We respond to girls’ age-appropriate learning needs by providing distinct Junior School, Middle School, Upper School and Senior College structure and activities.

We value individuality and the development of self-efficacy and optimism. A range of challenging activities help develop a love of learning, encourage risk-taking and foster confidence and independence.

Our teachers understand how girls learn, and they care about each girl's progress. At Wenona, we celebrate achievement. Girls’ talents and abilities are nurtured through close student-teacher interaction in the classroom, through academic care structures, and through a rich range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Our residential program has places for 50 boarders in Years 7 to Year 12, who come from local, rural and remote communities across Australia and overseas, Our boarders enjoy living in a unique city location that provides nearby access to a rich range of cultural opportunities. Boarding is celebrated at Wenona, an inclusive school which values diversity and welcomes girls from all over Australia and elsewhere in the world.  Up to 50 girls from Years 7 to 12 live in refurbished heritage accommodation in the heart of the School.

We pride ourselves on providing a safe and supportive environment for all girls in our care. Girls enjoy independence, respect, flexibility and fun as well as ample opportunities to pursue a wide range of academic and other activities.

Head of Boarding, Mrs Nonie Ayling, leads a team of dedicated staff who are carefully chosen to support each student.

Close to Sydney's cultural centre

Wenona's central yet safe location is right next to green and spacious St Leonards Park, and just a short walk from North Sydney Station and Sydney Harbour.

On weekends, girls experience Sydney life through activities such as visits to the Aquarium, walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the Rocks Markets and Darling Harbour or taking the ferry to Manly for some shopping.

Academic benefits

Boarders waste no time travelling to and from school. Those involved in Wenona's many sporting, debating and cultural activities enjoy being right on site for training, rehearsals and many competitions.

The Boarding House is connected to Wenona's Information Centre. A dedicated prep supervisor helps Middle School students with their homework. Senior College boarders have access to the Evening Study Centre (ESC), open from 5pm to 8pm Monday to Thursday, and staffed by teachers from all curriculum areas.

Boarding options

Wenona provides full and weekly boarding for 48 girls. Our boarders largely come from regional NSW, with some from overseas and other parts of Sydney, and they thrive on socialising with other girls from a huge range of backgrounds.

Full boarding is the most common arrangement but a number of local students enjoy the option of weekly boarding. From time to time, school families require temporary boarding and, when possible, the School seeks to make this option possible.

One of the exciting benefits of living in a community is that each girl is given an opportunity to live and work with girls from many different backgrounds. In this way the girls learn to live harmoniously, respect their differences, cooperate and compromise in order for all to be happy. Girls share rooms in the refurbished heritage Boarding Houses and room combinations are changed every term.

To find out more about Boarding, please contact our Enrolments Office on (02) 9409 4495.  Wenona will be visiting the Boarding Schools Expos in Dubbo (17- 18 May) and Tamworth (26-27 July) in 2019.

Student wellbeing underpins all we do at Wenona, which is why we place such strong emphasis on Pastoral Care. We take a holistic view of our girls’ development, nurturing each one and monitoring their personal progress from Kindergarten to Year 12 as they develop resilience, self-confidence, grace, compassion, kindness, a sense of humour and a capacity for adventure.

Formal Pastoral Care is delivered by Junior School classroom teachers,  Middle School, Upper School and Senior College Connect teachers, plus Year Coordinators and Heads of School. Across the School we encourage reflective practices and make time to share stories, mark achievements, express gratitude and celebrate.

Leadership opportunities, outdoor education, community connections, service learning initiatives and the vertical School House structure are designed to help each girl discover her best self and shape her sense of purpose so she can, in turn, help shape the world.

To educate and empower young women, in a global learning community, to serve and shape their world.
To provide a preeminent global education for the girls in our care by developing a contemporary, innovative and engaged learning community, committed to the inherent value and potential of each child.

Welcome to Wenona, an independent non-denominational day and boarding school for girls from Kindergarten to Year 12, based in North Sydney. Since Wenona was established in 1886 under the motto Ut Prosim, that I may serve, the School has sought to support, educate and inspire students to become confident young women who will revel in the challenges ahead of them.

We passionately believe in the effectiveness of girls’ education to empower young women to develop their strengths and talents. Research shows that in single-sex environments, girls feel most free to pursue their interests to the best of their abilities, in and outside of the classroom.

The School staff – from across Woodstock Infants, the Junior SchoolMiddle School, Upper School and Senior College, as well as the Boarding House – are life-long learners, equipped to bring out the best in our students, pastorally and academically. Our staff believes in the value of each girl, and is committed to their growth – from the youngest years, through adolescence to their final examinations, valedictory and life beyond school.

Wenona has a strong sense of community, and aims to instill in students a sense of hope, purpose and service. We aim to see young women graduating from Wenona as intelligent, gracious, compassionate and capable adults. We recognise each girl as an individual, with her own passions to discover and contributions to make as she steps out of the School gates.

Wenona also offers a healthy environment, with rich opportunities beyond classroom. Through involvement in sports, debating, performing arts, creative arts, leadership and service, girls discover their creativity, teamwork, work/life balance, and other life lessons they will take with them after graduating. It is our goal that each girl will go from strength to strength, develop courage and resilience, and have a strong sense of self, so they can go on to shape their worlds into the future.

Wenona Principal Dr Briony Scott congratulates Wenona’s Class of 2018 on their HSC results and their commitment to achieving their best.

"These are outstanding results, our highest since the 'new' HSC was introduced in 2001, and the second time in three years that Wenona has ranked in the top 15.

“Our students have achieved these wonderful results whilst also pursuing a wide range of interestes beyond the classroom - peforming arts, debating, sport, outdoor adventures, voluntary work and local community involvement - and have done so with great enjoyment and success. They have embraced Wenona's ethos of service and have actively engaged in a Renaissance education, by demonstrating a genuine passion for learning, and a real commitment to their studies, supported by a superb team of teachers.

“The girls' HSC achievements are but one piece of a jugsaw.  Of greater importance is the character and the wisdom they have formed, over the course of their education to date, and will continue to develop, as they take on the grand adventures of life! ”
