Wesley College is one of the leading International Baccalaureate (IB) coeducational schools in Australia, and is the only school in Victoria to offer an IB Programme which spans from Primary through to Senior School.
Our world-class IB Programme includes:
• The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) – 3 Years-olds to Year 6
• The Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) – Years 7 to 10

Primary Years Programme (IB PYP)
At Wesley College, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) is focused on building our students’ conceptual understanding, knowledge, skills and attitudes, not only to excel in their studies, but also for their personal growth and understanding of the world. It is grounded in a deep belief about the nature of learning and a desire to develop students who have an international outlook.

Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) enables students to learn and grow during a pivotal time in their lives. It builds on the knowledge and skills developed through the IB PYP, fostering a sense of intellectual curiosity, and providing students with an opportunity to express their thoughts and perspectives on what they have learnt.
Diploma Programme (IB DP)
Wesley offers a number of pathways to Senior School students, and a growing number of students (nearly half the Year 12 cohort), are electing to do our globally recognised International Baccalaureate Programme (IB DP).
Our IB DP provides a rigorous two-year pre-university curriculum, characterised by:
• Academic breadth, depth and rigour, which are recognised by universities worldwide
• Emphasis on promoting international awareness among students
• Attention to developing socially responsible citizens of the world with an awareness of global perspectives
At Wesley, we work with each student to help them select the study path that is right for them, to ensure they make informed choices about their future.
The IB DP is suited to students who aspire to pursue tertiary studies at university in Australia or overseas, and are interested in developing their international awareness and communication skills.

Boarding at 'Learning in Residence'
Wesley’s boarding facility, Learning in Residence, is purpose-built for students in Years 7 to 12 – with contemporary residences located within the Glen Waverley campus. It provides a safe, nurturing, and dynamic environment where students are empowered and supported to make the most of every opportunity - academically, socially and personally.
From the courses on offer to the architecture and location of the facility, everything has been designed to further enhance student learning. Learning in Residence provides a safe environment in metropolitan Melbourne where learning and living are inextricably linked.

As a leading coeducational open-entry school, we are immensely proud of the achievements of our Class of 2024 VCE and IB Diploma Program (IB DP) graduates.
Through their diligence, determination and resilience, the Class of 2024 has continued Wesley College’s long tradition of academic achievement. In 2024, 60% of students completed the VCE and 40% completed the IB DP. Highlights of their academic success include:

- Combined median VCE and IB DP ATAR is 83.85
- Median IB DP ATAR is 90.25
- 32.5% of 2024 Year 12 students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10%

Fostering confident readers through inquiry and evidence-based literacy instruction
Learning to read is fundamental to academic achievement and developing a lifelong love of learning.
As an IB World School, Wesley provides a holistic education that is reflected not only in what we teach, but how we teach. In our Junior Schools (from the Early Childhood Learning Centre to Year 4), we embed literacy across all areas of learning, ensuring it is an integral part of every student's educational experience.
At Wesley, we nurture students’ natural curiosity to help them draw meaning and deepen their understanding of what they are learning. Through inquiry-based learning, students engage with texts and ask meaningful questions, fostering both curiosity and a genuine engagement with their learning. This approach encourages them to see reading and writing as essential tools for understanding the world around them.
But how do we blend student-driven inquiry with direct teacher instruction? The answer lies in a balanced approach - one that is vital for developing confident, capable readers and writers.
While inquiry supports engagement and meaning-making, foundational literacy skills such as phonics, decoding, and fluency require structured, explicit instruction. Our teachers provide systematic, direct teaching in key areas including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, laying the groundwork for lifelong literacy.
Supported by educational research through 'the science of reading', Wesley employs the Sounds-Write approach to teaching literacy in Junior School, which teaches the alphabetic code, blending, segmenting and fluency through a clear, cumulative approach, ideal for building early reading skills amongst PYP learners.
Literacy is one of the most important foundational skills for young learners. Our approach to teaching literacy is grounded in both inquiry and evidence-based instruction, ensuring our students become capable, confident readers and writers. While our students in Junior School may still be young, they are developing crucial foundations for academic achievement and for their future careers in an increasingly globalised world.
