BGS also offers over 30 clubs and activities where boys can explore special interests such as aviation or lapidary; engage in thinking beyond the classroom, such as Future Problem Solving or Grammar Engineers; or where they are encouraged to become better global citizens, such as Greening Grammar or Closing the Gap.

Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) promotes academic excellence grounded in rich history and strong values, inspiring students to pursue their passions and fulfil their potential.

An independent, non-denominational day and boarding school for boys, BGS has been a leader in education in Australia since its foundation in 1868. The School is located on the edge of Brisbane CBD and caters to 2,000 boys from Years 5 to 12.

A BGS education is built on three core programs: Academic, Cocurricular and Student Wellbeing.

The school takes a holistic approach in developing our students’ talents and educating them about the importance of curiosity, community and being a person of good character.

Our commitment to innovation is exemplified by the educational philosophy that underpins our state-of-the-art STEAM Precinct. The learning hub opened in 2024 and combines the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Students are encouraged to participate in sports, the arts and community service, which teaches them valuable life skills beyond the school gates. By taking part in a broad range of activities, students explore new interests, develop leadership skills and contribute meaningfully to community initiatives.

The wide-ranging careers of our Old Boys reflect what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication and a BGS education.

Years 5 and 6 students undertake a core course that includes the study of the following disciplines: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Drama, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Spanish and Physical Education.

Year 7 students undertake a core course of study in English, Maths, Science, History and Physical Education. During the year students also engage in one semester’s study in each of the following: Geography, Art, Drama, Music, Design and Technology, Latin and two of the modern languages (Chinese, Japanese, French and German).

Year 8 students undertake a core course of study in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Physical Education and one of the modern languages (Chinese, Japanese, French and German). Over the year students also undertake one semester’s study in each of the following: Art, Design and Technology, Drama and Music.

In Year 9 all students study English, Maths, Science, History and one of either Geography or Latin (entry to which is conditional). In addition, all students continue with their study of one of the modern languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese) and undertake regular or rotational classes in Physical Education, Design and Technology, Music, Drama and Art.

In Year 10 all students study English, Maths, Science and History. Students continue from Year 9 with their study of one of Geography, Music or Latin and their choice of one of the modern languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese). Students also undertake regular or rotational classes in Physical Education, Design and Technology, and Art.

In Years 11 and 12 all students study English and at least one Mathematics subject. Students choose a combination of a further four subjects from the Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Earth Science, Technology Studies, Physical Education), the Humanities (Geography, Economics, Modern History, Ancient History), Languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin) and the Arts (Music, Drama, Art). Students are required to undertake a balanced course of study reflective of the School’s commitment to a liberal
education.
Our STEAM Precinct, opened in early 2024, is the newest addition to our Spring Hill site. Featuring learning pods, an indoor amphitheatre, high-tech science laboratories, collaborative classrooms, and a Sports Science Lab, this multi-level facility is an atrium of inter-faculty innovation, preparing students for careers that do not yet exist.

The Lilley Centre is a state-of-the-art academic facility, incorporating the Senior Library, an interactive forum, flexible ICT-rich learning spaces, teaching laboratory and seniors’ room.

Our Arts precinct serves the performing and fine arts with art studios, a theatre, practice rooms and a rehearsal gallery.

In 2014, the Centenary Library for Year 7 and 8 boys was opened, complete with its own film studio. Modern Lapidary and Creative Design Laboratories enhance the boys’ science and technology experiences. The arrival of Year 5 students to the school has seen the construction of a new social space complete with climbing gymnasium and outdoor classroom.

On-site sports facilities include ovals, cricket nets, tennis courts and a modern Indoor Sports Centre with a heated pool, multi-purpose courts, cricket nets, weights and training room and gymnastics arena.

Off-site facilities include a 20-hectare sporting ground with playing fields for football, rugby and cricket; a rowing shed on the Brisbane River; and a gold standard Outdoor Education Centre at Moogerah.

All GPS sports and cultural activities (chess and debating) and a range of other sports and activities including fencing, Tae Kwon-Do, drama, an extensive music program, Computer Club, Robotics Club and Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme.

Boarding has been an integral and dynamic part of the School’s landscape since it opened in 1869. Boarders are in the perfect position and have ample opportunity to access the vast array of experiences the School has to offer. As Harlin House is located at the heart of the campus, the boarders have, on their doorstep, extensive playing fields, the Indoor Sports Centre and the Music Centre, and need only walk about 50m to The Lilley Centre for prep which houses the Senior Library which the boarders have access to during weeknights.

This stimulating boarding environment is comprised of young men from rural and regional communities, provincial cities and overseas locations. A warm and nurturing community, the boys undoubtedly form strong bonds and valued friendships that continue long after school, often lasting a lifetime. Our house tutors are all graduate staff, the majority of them teachers, who focus on supporting the boys through the many personal and academic challenges that are a part of life.

Our aim is that boarding at Brisbane Grammar School will provide your son with a chance to develop both his emotional and intellectual intelligence through his interaction with a diverse range of people and experiences.

Our expansive Student Wellbeing Program supports and develops our students' emotional resilience and intelligence. A Student Wellbeing Coordinator oversees the implementation of these programs from Years 5 to 12. Our programs assist boys to make sense of their world and their connections to it.

Our Ambition
Brisbane Grammar School aspires to be the best school for boys in Australia, and an international leader in teaching and learning. We are committed to offering premium educational and leadership opportunities for boys of all backgrounds, strengthening global connections, building a vibrant school community among students, parents, staff, Old Boys and broader society.
Our Purpose
Brisbane Grammar School educates boys within a strong learning culture that is innovative yet respectful of its traditions, by nurturing their intellectual, physical and emotional wellbeing to become thoughtful and confident men of character who contribute to their communities.

The 2024 ATAR results have been released for Brisbane Grammar School’s senior cohort, delivering an outstanding outcome across the board, including a median ATAR of 95.40. This exceptional outcome is particularly noteworthy given the size and diversity of BGS’ nonselective senior cohort of 262 boys, and reinforces Wednesday's fantastic QCE results, as follows:

  • 41 perfect scores of 100/100 were attained across 11 different subjects.
  • The median subject score for all BGS Seniors across all subjects is 89/100.
  • 75% of BGS Seniors earned a grade of ‘A’ in at least three of their six subjects.
  • Of the 262 students in the cohort, five students achieved an ATAR rank of 99.95, and five students secured an ATAR of 99.90.

Further ATAR highlights included:

  • Over 19.2% of students received an ATAR of 99 and above.
  • Over 29.3% of students received an ATAR of 98 and above.
  • Over 51% of students received an ATAR of 95 and above.
  • 41 perfect subject scores of 100/100.
  • 78 students received an A in six subjects (30% of the cohort).

Our ambition to be the best school for boys in Australia inspires us to create an environment where boys pursue their talents and realise their potential.

The education of boys requires scholarly, social and emotional instruction. Our mission is to teach, model and build academic and social behaviours that will lead to full and successful lives beyond school.

Every boy is given a place to belong and an opportunity to excel. Our broad liberal education, combined with extensive Cocurricular and Student Wellbeing programs, provides every boy with the foundation to pursue diverse careers.

We remain resolute in our commitment to developing thoughtful and confident young men of character who contribute to their communities.

Our talented teaching staff are innovators, continually developing and expanding their learning for the benefit of students. We constantly review and develop our programs, practices, and facilities to equip boys with skills for the 21st century, including critical and creative thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work in a team.

The academic results of our graduating seniors reflect the School motto, "Nil Sine Labore" - Nothing Without Hard Work. What we require is an open and enthusiastic attitude, and a willingness to seize the opportunities to engage and belong.

This invitation is lifelong, with past and present parents, staff, Old Boys and friends making up our rich school community.

Thank you for joining us on the BGS journey.
