Extension, Acceleration and Enrichment

Understanding and meeting the unique educational needs of gifted students is a priority at Nazareth College. We employ three key strategies—academic acceleration, extension, and enrichment—to provide a tailored and enriching learning experience for our students.

Heading

Acceleration

Acceleration involves propelling students through the curriculum at a faster pace than their peers. At Nazareth College, Laurel students admitted to the Laurel Science program have the opportunity to complete Year 7 to 10 Science in just three years. This not only broadens their academic horizons but also opens up a range of options for their senior years, including the possibility of undertaking additional VCE Units in Year 10.

Additionally, outstanding Year 9 students may be invited to accelerate into a VCE Unit 1 and 2 subject in Year 10, based on an average of 80% or above in Semester One of Year 9 across subjects.

Extension

Extension involves offering additional learning opportunities within the existing curriculum. Our Learning Awareness Program for English and Maths in Year 7, 8, and 9 incorporates the Knowledge stream to provide extension opportunities.

Prior to each unit of work, students engage in a Learning Conversation with their teachers to tailor their learning experience. High-achieving students are encouraged to choose the Knowledge Stream, which involves more challenging assignments, projects, and tasks that stimulate higher-level thinking skills.

Enrichment

Enrichment is about expanding learning beyond the standard curriculum, allowing students to delve deeper into their interests and passions. At Nazareth College, we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities, including participation in clubs such as the Robotics Club, Lego Club, and Digital Art Club. Our students can also engage in competitions like the Science Talent Search, Westpac Maths Competition, and Reading Challenge, providing avenues to explore and showcase their talents.Enrichment activities are optional, allowing students to choose those that align with their individual interests.

At the core of our educational philosophy is the holistic development of each student. We believe in fostering growth across religious, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains (Catholic Education Melbourne, 2016). Our commitment to extension, acceleration, and enrichment programs reflects our dedication to ensuring the flourishing of high-achieving students at Nazareth College.

Adolescence is a time when children undergo a multitude of changes and developments, and can be a challenging experience on a number of levels.

The development of sophisticated communication and social skills is a major factor in the journey from childhood through adolescence, and learning to communicate and relate to members of the opposite gender is a vital aspect of this development.

A Co-Educational environment fosters the positive development of interpersonal skills between both genders, where students are able to interact with each other within a safe, supported environment. Valuable skills are learned through these interactions, such as learning to cooperate with and work alongside peers of both genders, and learning to respect and celebrate both the differences and similarities shared between female and male students. Sharing a learning environment with the opposite gender allows students to develop mutual respect, acceptance, and the ability to relate to each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner.

When young adults complete their secondary school education, they are faced with the task of integrating into the wider community on several levels, including the workforce, tertiary education, and social settings. Students who have been immersed in a Co-Educational learning environment are fortunate, as they have already gained several years’ experience interacting with and sharing space with both genders. A more mature and insightful understanding of society in general can be gained by individuals who attend a Co-Educational school, and these individuals are well-equipped to continue their journey into adulthood as respectful, responsible and courteous young adults.

Nazareth College is dedicated to providing students with opportunities to achieve their personal best academically, spiritually and socially. In our Co-Educational setting students develop strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on spirituality and respect for all others, and the ability to successfully interact with both genders on a day-to-day basis.

Nazareth College has a dedicated Pathways Co-ordinator to guide students through their education options, both during and after their time at the College, and help them find their path in life. Contact the Pathways Co-ordinator via email: elena.flodstrom@nazareth.vic.edu.au

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. The VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university or TAFE and to employment. The College offers VCE subjects to Year 11, 12, and select Year 10 students in a wide variety of subject areas.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

The College offers a number of opportunities for students to undertake VET courses as part of their study program. Nazareth offers VET courses in many different fields of study in Years 11 and 12.

Benefits of VET:

  • Provide credits for both VCE and VCAL courses
  • TAFE Certificates
  • Commence TAFE training in areas such as trade pre-apprenticeship courses while still in school
  • Experience applied learning in an adult learning environment

VET courses are offered to senior students in a range of fields including Building and Construction, Business, Electrotechnology, Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Multimedia, Sport and Recreation, Event Management and Community Services. These are provided at various RTO’s including Chisholm Institute, Holmesglen and Swinburne.

We are fortunate to partner with four other local schools in the DREAM Trade Training Centre at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong. This $7.5 million modern facility delivers a range of trades courses including “taster” programs to interested students. One of the most popular programs offered at the centre is a Taster Day for Year 9 students in Term 2 or Term 3.

Certificate III in Music Performance and Certificate II in Dance

At Nazareth College we are proud offer a Certificate III in Music Performance and Certificate II in Dance so we can benefit from our state of the art facilities in the Performing Arts Centre and students can remain on campus. These two Certificates are offered to students both at the College and from other local schools and is taught by our staff who have undertaken Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. This has added a different dimension to our Performing Arts program and to our VET offerings. This program offers eligible Year 11 and 12 students interested in Music and Dance the opportunity to develop their musicianship and stagecraft skills in a dedicated performance auditorium. Students learn to develop their stage persona and focus on developing knowledge and skills so that they can perform with confidence at a wide array of internal and external public concerts.

Applicants need to have a strong interest in developing their skills on a particular instrument (including voice) or various styles of Dance and are encouraged to explore their creative inclinations in both group and/or solo performance.

Victorian Certificate of Education - Vocational Major (VCE VM)

The Victorian Certificate of Education – Vocational Major is a two year program offered at Year 11 and 12.

The qualification provides flexible entry and exit points for a range of student abilities and interests, and offer a clear progression for skills, knowledge and attitudinal development.

In 2023 as the certificate phases in, Year 11 students will be enrolled in VCE-VM while Year 12 students will complete their VM.

Further information is available in the VCE Vocational Major Guide on the Nazareth College website under Subject Selection.
